~NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY~
~THE FIVE PILLARS OF NJHS~
NJHS is looking for awesomeness!
What is NJHS?
Membership in the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is among the highest honors awarded to middle school students. The chapter works hard to bring the accomplishments of outstanding students to the attention of parents, teachers, peers, and the community, striving to give practical meaning to Society’s standards of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. These five ideas are considered the basis for selection. A student is not inducted simply because of a high academic average. The National Junior Honor Society strives to recognize the total student who excels in all these areas.
Who is eligible?
Membership in NJHS is not easy a student must have a grade of 93 or above in all classes each quarter to be eligible for membership and model the high levels of the Society’s standards of service, leadership, character, and citizenship at all times. After being officially inducted, should one of the NJHS student’s grades fall below a 93 in any subject, they will have one quarter to restore the grade. Behavior that does not exemplify the Society's standards will not be tolerated and could lead to dismissal from NJHS.
What are the NJHS responsibilities?
Membership, however, is more than an honor. It is an ongoing responsibility and obligation to continue demonstrating the outstanding qualities that resulted in a student’s selection. Our NJHS Chapter is effective and meaningful when each member becomes involved. This includes completing four
hours of community service (these hours can also count as high school community service hours), attending biweekly meetings, completing an individual and group service project, and, most importantly, having fun!

NJHS HISTORY
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. These five pillars have been associated with membership in the organization since its inception in 1929. Learn more about these five pillars of membership here.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NJHS activities. NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, US Territories, and around the world. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
As such, NJHS chapters and students are in schools that care not only about student achievement, but also community engagement.
NJHS students and their peers volunteer in their communities at the highest rates and make connecting with and serving within the community a priority. The average chapter contributes:
-
650 hours of school/community service
-
$1,000 in charitable donations
-
500 pounds of food to local, state, and national causes
-
375 pints of blood
