Model Bridge Building Contest
The goal of this competition is to design and construct a structure with the specified materials that can adhere to the following: • Clear a span of 36” (with horizontal end restraints at 40” for arch bridge designs) or clear a span of 40” (horizontally unrestrained). • Hold at least the weight of the loading device (approximately 9 ½ lbs). Prizes will be awarded based on the following categories: • Most Efficient: Bridge efficiency is defined as the highest ratio of the total load to self-weight of the bridge. In the event of a tie, the bridge with the higher aesthetic ranking will be declared the winner. • Most Aesthetic: Aesthetics is based on craftsmanship, creativity, and display of sound design principles. The winner will be determined by the judges. In the event of a tie, the more efficient bridge will be declared the winner.

Probably, one of the most important organs in our body is the brain. Approximately 3 pounds with 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion connections, is the manager of our body. As you know, both hemispheres of our brain are much alike but there is a big difference in how they work and process information. Our left-side is responsible for analytical and methodical thinking, while the right side is responsible for creative or artistic thinking.

Future City has five different pieces that all need to be completed – designing the SimCity, researching and writing the city description, building the model, developing a project plan, and presenting the city to the judges. Most teams work together to come up with the big ideas and direction for their city and then they divide up the work depending on a teammate’s interests and skills. Talk to your teammates, your educator coach, and mentor about what parts of Future City you are most interested in.

2021 MATH VIDEO CHALLENGE
The Contest in a Nutshell:

The Math Video Challenge is a project-based team contest that is completely free. Students work in teams of 4 to create a video that shows a solution to a MATHCOUNTS problem in a real-world setting. The program is designed to be flexible so teams can work on videos anytime between the fall (when registration opens) and March 6 (the submission deadline). Videos are evaluated based on 5 criteria:

Mathematical Content: Is an appropriate approach to solving the problem used? Are there any errors?

Communication: Is the math communicated clearly and logically? Is time in the video used effectively?

Creativity: Is the video's concept original or memorable? Does the video show imagination?

Real-World Scenario: Does the video present a clear, real-world application of math concepts in the problem?

Adherence to Rules: Is the video 5 minutes or less? Does it follow rules regarding copyrighted material (like music, images or video clips)? Did the students do the work themselves?
